Herrera Building Bridges in Tibet

Herrera is working with World Concern on a project to build bridges in remote regions of Tibet’s Qomolangma Nature Preserve. Carlos Herrera and Michael Spillane recently returned from a three week trip to the region, where they performed site evaluation and topographic surveys necessary to support the bridge building project. Herrera Welcomes Amanda Azous to our Natural Resources Group

Herrera Environmental Consultants, Inc. is pleased to announce that Amanda Azous has joined Herrera’s natural resources group as a senior scientist specializing in aquatic resources and ecological restoration including marine and estuarine enhancement and permitting. Ms. Azous is a recognized authority on wetlands and management of ecosystem processes. Prior to joining Herrera, Ms. Azous was a sole proprietor working in the diverse ecosystems in the San Juan Islands. She will assist with freshwater and marine environmental and engineering projects at Herrera, including transportation improvement projects for the Federal Highway Administration in Alaska and numerous other projects along Washington shorelines and coastal areas. Her work has contributed significantly to developing scientific and engineering standards for effectively managing stormwater to protect wetland biological functions. Ms. Azous is co-editor and primary author of the reference textbook Wetlands and Urbanization published in 2001 by CRC Press, which presents an integrated approach to evaluating the impact of landscape urbanization on wetland functions. Ms. Azous’ research provides a model for future comprehensive investigations of wetland impacts from urbanization.

Herrera Adds Civil and Environmental Engineering Staff

Herrera Environmental Consultants, Inc. is pleased to announce the addition of Kevin Houck, Julie Howe, Gina Catarra, and Katie Bullock to our water resources engineering and hazardous materials management groups. Mr. Houck served as an engineering intern at Herrera during 2000-2001 and now joins Herrera’s civil design engineers working on projects that include King County’s Sweyolocken pump station and siting and conveyance design for the new Brightwater Wastewater Treatment Plant. Ms. Howe specializes in environmental site assessments with extensive experience on CERCLA and RCRA projects. Ms. Catarra has expertise in analytical chemistry and wetland science and management. Ms. Bullock is an environmental engineer specializing in environmental site assessments. They will provide additional expertise for Herrera’s on-call hazardous materials contracts with the Washington State Department of Transportation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Herrera Adds Aquatic Science Staff

Herrera Environmental Consultants, Inc. is pleased to announce the addition of Jennifer Goldsmith, Michael Cawrse, and Alex Svendsen to our water quality group. Ms. Goldsmith specializes in developing water quality monitoring programs, water quality data interpretation and impact assessment, and storm water analysis. Mr. Cawrse is an environmental scientist specializing in water quality and aquatic habitat. He joined Herrera in 2002 after several years of experience with the Skagit County Department of Public Works. Mr. Svendsen’s expertise includes water quality, environmental restoration, and remediation.
