This is the second ACEC win for Herrera our Hoh River Engineered Logjam Highway 101 Protection Project took home the Gold in 2005. Below is a clip from the Daily Journal of Commerce.

Best in State Gold Awards

Gold award for original or innovative application of new or existing techniques
Winner: Herrera Environmental Consultants
Project: Mashel River Salmon Habitat Restoration
Owner: South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group

In 2004, the Nisqually Indian Tribe released a multispecies management plan for the Nisqually River Basin which identified the Mashel River as being among the highest priority reaches for habitat restoration. The goals were to reconnect the floodplain, bring wood back into the river and protect development while enhancing the river’s salmon production capabilities. The South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group brought in Herrera Environmental Consultants to help find a solution that would encompass mainstream, riparian and off-channel habitats as well as floodplain reconnection. Herrera designed 13 engineered logjam structures to reconnect the river to its floodplain and take advantage of mature existing vegetation. The man-made logjams obstructed the river flow and raised water elevations enough to inundate secondary channels and portions of the floodplain. This was critical in maintaining salmon populations as well as floodplain function and biodiversity.

On June 9, volunteers donned work gloves and rain coats, grabbed shovels and rakes, and marched out to improve their city. It was Seattle Works Day; and Herrera Environmental Consultants was proud to be a part of it. Seattle Works Day is an annual event sponsored by local businesses and organized by Seattle Works, a nonprofit volunteer organization. This year, nearly two dozen of Herrera’s employees braved less-than-ideal weather conditions and put in more than 80 volunteer hours at Discovery Park. Located in northwest Seattle, Discovery Park has more than 9 miles of heavily wooded trails, and park ground crews struggle to maintain them on their own. The many trails need to be cleared every 2 to 3 years, and the park relies on volunteers to help preserve the integrity of the trail system. Our Herrera employees arrived at the site on Saturday morning to periodic downpours and took the lead in getting everyone working on the trail system. Many Herrera employees run or hike the North Beach Trail, so this was of personal importance to our team members. They assisted with clearing the trail of seasonal debris, cutting back overgrown brush, and installing water bars.

Despite the bad weather, more than 1,500 volunteers put in more than 4,500 hours of volunteer time for this year’s Seattle Works Day. Project teams were active all over Seattle, including Commodore Park, Golden Gardens, The Nature Consortium, Discovery Park, Green Lake, and many others. More information about the event and Seattle Work’s future volunteer projects can be found here.

Herrera’s own Josh Wozniak, natural resource scientist, made an exciting discovery while performing rare plant surveys for WSDOT. In his own words,

“I was fortunate last week to receive an honor that I thought I would never achieve, to find undocumented locations of rare plants. Only a handful of new records for the state come in each year, and rarely in proximity to developed areas, despite ongoing surveys.

During rare plant surveys for WSDOT’s SW region last week, I found populations of two rare plants, Small-Flowered Trillium and Western Wahoo. I happened to be in the right place, at the right time!”

The plants, which were found in Clark County, will be added to a statewide database which is used to advise the design of future projects, as a research tool, and is part of a monitoring program which tracks the changes in these rare plant populations over time.

As a firm with an environmental focus, Herrera is proud to employ professionals whose lifestyles mirror their professions. During May, three separate Herrera cycling teams competed in the Seattle Group Health Commute Challenge. Sponsored by the Cascade Bicycle Club and Group Health, the event is one of several initiatives driving the City of Seattle’s new Bicycle Master Plan, which has a goal of tripling the use of bicycles for all-purpose trips by 2017.

One third of our Herrera Seattle office employees participated in this year’s challenge. Our cyclists competed all month not just against other teams in the area but with each other to determine who could ride the most, both in terms of total miles and percentage of overall commuting trips. Herrera employees made an impressive 358 commutes to work on their bikes, totaling more than 3,906 miles! While our teams did not place in the overall competition, team Herrera Dos emerged victorious from the intense intra-Herrera competition with an impressive 1,422 miles, closely followed by team Herrera Uno with 1,412 miles, with team Herrera Tres in third with 1,072 miles. Sportsmanship and Herrera’s company spirit of being the best at what we do helped make all three teams push themselves hard during the 4-week competition. Although the city challenge ended in May, Herrera cyclists are continuing their intra-Herrera competition through June.

On May 12th, the City of Seattle celebrated the grand opening of the Chief Sealth Trail. Staff at Herrera Environmental Consultants can look on with pride, having played a key role in bringing Seattle’s first off-street multi-use trail to completion.

Part of Puget Sound Regional Council’s Vision 2020 Plan and winner of the Joint Sustainability Award from the American Planning Association, the new Chief Sealth Trail connects to an existing system of streets and sidewalks to form a multi-use pedestrian and cyclist trail stretching 3.6 miles from S Gazelle to S Dawson Street. Herrera was contracted by the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) in 2004 to assist with environmental compliance, technical review, and scoping. Specifically, Herrera helped complete an addendum to the existing Environmental Impact Statement; that allowed SDOT to use soil excavated from Sound Transit’s Central Link Project in the Beacon Hill neighborhood for construction of the Chief Sealth Trail. Herrera coordinated their efforts with Sound Transit and managed to complete the process in just two months. As a result, SDOT was able to use most of the soil from the Beacon Hill site at no additional cost to the city.

The Chief Sealth Trail’s winding path was designed to avoid affecting local wetlands and their buffers. Herrera assisted SDOT with delineating wetlands along the entire length of the trail to ensure their protection. The soil procured through Herrera’s permitting work with Sound Transit was used to reduce slopes along the trail while avoiding these sensitive areas.

Our engineers and scientists have conducted baseline environmental audits at individual vehicle maintenance shops, paint spray booths, electroplating facilities, petroleum storage facilities, and wood treating facilities, as well as across a large Department of Energy site. Our wastestream inventories focus on liquid effluents for individual processes, as well as site-wide discharges that require NPDES permit compliance. We determine the environmental impacts of stormwater and industrial wastewater loading through system monitoring and flow and transport modeling.

Our evaluations of facilities operations extend to site characterization and design of control and treatment units to attain compliance. We perform multi-media sampling (soil, water, sludge and product), oversee monitoring well installations, and sample tanks. Our industrial process reviews range from treatment of high level mixed waste at Hanford with evaluation of RCRA land disposal restrictions to maintenance yard handling of cleaning fluids, pesticides, and road salt to conducting SPCC inspections.

Herrera’s engineering services include design of spill containment structures, wastewater treatment systems, and stormwater flow control; evaluation of alternative waste treatment methods; and evaluation of proposed hazardous waste landfill design.

We provide programmatic support to local and state agencies to identify potential industrial users, to determine typical waste stream profiles for specific industries, and to develop strategies for waste recycling and reduction.
